Senegal Clinches Back-to-Back AFCON Titles

(MENAFN) Senegal captured the 35th Africa Cup of Nations crown on Sunday, edging hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time in a tense and dramatic final at the 69,500-seat Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The contest remained scoreless through regular time, with both sides locked in a tactical battle. In the 95th minute, Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review that judged Senegal defender Malick Diouf to have fouled Brahim Diaz inside the box. The ruling triggered fierce protests from Senegalese players and caused a lengthy stoppage.

When play resumed deep into stoppage time, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy became the hero by denying Diaz’s Panenka-style penalty, keeping Senegal alive and pushing the match into extra time.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 94th minute of extra time, when Pape Gueye fired home the decisive strike to seal victory.

With the result, Senegal secured their second consecutive AFCON championship, following their triumph in the previous edition, while Morocco missed out on the chance to lift the trophy on home soil.
